Becket: The Boy Who Was Addicted to Dance

Spotted: Ruka, Boston MA

Name: Marilynn Becket (goes by Becket)

Age: 27

Place of origin: Boise, Idaho

Life story: It starts with his birth. Becket was born in the middle of farming season, a very large disservice to his father, Thomas. He was named Marilynn after his great aunt who requested it on her deathbed (his parents thought they were having a girl). She promised them all her money if they named their next child after her, so they did. When Becket was 7, he caught a glimpse of his mother watching “Dance Moms” and fell in love with dance (this was his mothers plan. She thought she was having a girl and wanted a little ballerina. When they found out she as having a boy, she didn’t change her mind on the ballerina wish). his mother took him to audition for dance moms, dressed up as a girl. While he was spinning, his wig flew off and he was discovered to be a boy! Abby Lee Miller was not happy, and banned them for life from the studio. After that, his mother gave up on Becket’s dancing dream.

Thomas Riddley Becket hated children. In turn, to get closer to his father, Becket started watching football with him. Once in high school, he joined the football team but his horrid posture from years of untrained dance stretches got in the way of him excelling. One day, Becket’s chemistry teacher was too hung over to teach, so he turned on “High School Musical”. Troy Bolont inspired Becket to try out for his schools musical, Cats. In preparation for the audition, Becket and some other misfits started holding dance practice behind the gym. The day of the audition came and Becket felt ready. The acting portion went well, however that wasn’t his true passion. Finally it was time for the dance audition and Becket nervously walked on to the stage. Tommy (Beckets bratty brother) snuck into the back of the theatre and saw his brother on stage doing his dance. Tommy and his friends burst out laughing, shouting out “yo look, it’s silly Elliot”. This made Becket bomb the rest of the audition. After that he swore off all theatre and dance together.

Beckets father, who hated children, wanted him to take over the family couch covering business. He started the business to protect his loved furniture from the pesky children and quite honestly to get him out of farming. Tommy was always destined for the corporate world and his parents understood that (he is now in advertising). Becket went to college for plastics but he continued running his own dance practices on the side. In Beckets year two Plastic Makes Perfect course, he developed a crush. The Crush and Becket were the only ones uninterested in plastic. One starry night, Becket and The Crush were lying on the lawn, talking about their futures. Becket said “Darn, I wish I didn’t have to go into plastics”. The Crush said, “Ya know, I’m not going into plastics. I’m going to be a dancer”. From then on, Becket was re-addicted to the art form. Becket and The Crush were supposed to go on a date, but The Crush never showed. Becket was heart broken so he poured the pain into his dance.

4 months later, Becket dropped out of college and had a falling out with his father (who hated children). Becket started going to auditions again but kept in chickening out. He went to one audition at the Boston Opera House. He was early and quite nervous so he went to a nearby bar (before every audition he he a drink for courage). He walks in and he sees Yoga Man, a worker at the restaurant, leading the staff in a yoga circle and is immediately enamored. The workers ask if Becket is the new guy, and something in him tells him to say yes. He starts working at the restaurant, being trained by a man he likes to call Man Bun.

A few months in, Yoga Ma (who has incredible posture), invited Becket to a dance class his roommate runs after hours at the Opera House. Yoga Man felt bad for Becket because he has so many allergies, he can never taste the food at the restaurant. Whenever anyone asks him for recommendations, he just says, “Yeah, that’s good”. At the dance club, Becket improves his skill and he starts to open up. Becket didn’t really like working at the restaurant but Tommy kept going to the restaurant and charging his client meals on a tab that he never paid so Becket was stuck working there.

Some of Becket’s dance club friends had made it into the touring production that was at the Opera House. Becket goes backstage to say hi, when he accidentally stumbles into the leads dressing room. He turns around only to find…The Crush. There’s this moment of realization and The Crush starts apologizing. All of Becket’s pains come to the surface. They start arguing and Becket storms off, unbeknownst to him, onto the stage with the curtain down. The Crush follows to continue the conversation but because he’s a bit of a pre madonna, he’s told the lighting crew that whenever, and i mean whenever, he’s on stage the lights are on him so the curtains go up with The Crush and Becket on stage. They’re so emotional but they can’t speak anymore so they start arguing through dance and create what becomes known as the worlds greatest improvised dance piece, ending with a kiss. Standing ovation. The directors go on to make it a permanent part of the show. Becket leaves the restaurant and fulfills his dreams of being a dancer.
